Session Description The global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), as a significant space-based geospatial infrastructure, have recently experienced significant developments. The next decade will witness a high demand and rapid growth of the positioning technologies and systems with a high-accuracy positioning capability anywhere and anytime using new generation multi-GNSS systems; such as Beidou, Galileo, Glonass, QZSS, EGNOS and WAAS. Combined with big data analytics and advanced sensor technologies, this will open a new chapter of geodetic innovation in science, technology and engineering.

The multiple GNSS space constellations, coupled with the ground-based national positioning infrastructure, are considered as a new, robust atmospheric sounding sensor and technique which have been used extensively for studying atmosphere, weather, climate and space weather. The current geodesy-capable satellite programs that underpin our enhanced understanding of the earth system and atmospheric processes, severe weather, climate change and environment include CHAMP, DORIS, GRACE, COSMIC, MetOp, TerraSAR-X, etc. In this context, the synergy between GNSS and atmospheric modelling becomes an important part of geodetic research.

This session is dedicated to the emerging research topics related to new generation GNSS and its innovative applications. We welcome contributions from the following areas: GNSS reflectometry and refractometry (e.g. new developments in radio occultation, GNSS for severe weather, dynamics of troposphere and ionosphere, climate benchmarking and nowcasting applications, new satellite programs for atmosphere sounding, scatterometery, reflectometry and tomography techniques), recent developments in geodetic data analytics and GNSS data processing algorithms (e.g. novel multi-GNSS algorithms, bias issues, PPP-RTK, improved ambiguity solutions), ubiquitous positioning/ubiquitous geomatics, advanced geodetic technologies for space environmental management and space tracking, enhanced positioning with the aid of meteorological models and synergies between NWP and GNSS, and the latest developments in national multi-sensor and multi-purpose positioning infrastructure.
